There are several reasons why people with multiple sclerosis (MS) should consider exercising regularly:
Improved physical functioning: Exercise can improve overall physical functioning, including strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility, which can be impaired in people with MS.
Reduced fatigue: Many people with MS experience fatigue, which can make it difficult to engage in daily activities. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce fatigue in people with MS.
Improved mood: Exercise has been shown to have positive effects on mood, including reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Disease management: Exercise can help manage the symptoms of MS, including spasticity, muscle weakness, and poor coordination.
Improved cardiovascular health: People with MS have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, which can be reduced through regular exercise.
Increased bone density: People with MS have an increased risk of osteoporosis, and weight-bearing exercises can help increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures.
Improved cognitive function: Exercise has been shown to improve cognitive function in people with MS, including memory, attention, and processing speed.
It is important for people with MS to consult with their healthcare provider before beginning an exercise program, as they can provide guidance on the most appropriate types of exercise and intensity levels. I have seen first hand the improvements exercise offers for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), research continues to show us how important exercise is for not only people with MS but for people from all walks of life. I believe with the proper care and training no one has too miss out on access to creating a healthier and happier life with some added exercise.
